The history of cornea transplantation dates to the early 20th century. The first successful human cornea transplant was performed by Dr. Eduard Zirm, an Austrian ophthalmologist, in 1905. Since then, advancements in surgical techniques and the development of eye banks for cornea donation have significantly improved the success rates of corneal transplants.
