Dos and Don’ts

The success of intestine transplant depends on effective collaboration between the patient, their families, and the transplant teams. Patients are advised to take their prescribed medicine regularly and not miss any of the follow-up appointments. In case of any unexpected symptoms, they should immediately contact the transplant team, even if the problem may seem unrelated. Adherence to safe hygienic practices, intake of clean, cooked food, and avoiding potentially infected food and water helps avoid infections. Patients may be prescribed a special diet for the first few weeks after the transplant. Patients should avoid behaviors that can increase their risk of infection, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and using recreational drugs, and seek emotional and psychological support, as required to cope with any stresses.

Transplantation can be a challenging experience and joining support groups or speaking with a counselor may be helpful. Patients should avoid heavy exercises for the first 3 months and then resume physical activities in a graduated manner.
